September 2018: Linn County Tree Farm of the year tour

Linn County Tree Farm of the year tour: Sherm and Leslie Weld are the 2018 Linn County tree farmers of the year. Their 140 acre farm, on Crescent hill road near Holley, has been in Weld family for over 50 years. On the tour we will view an active commercial thinning operation conducted by Scott Melcher. The stand being thinned was converted from a hayfield to a Douglas fir forest 20 years ago. We will also view and discus the establishment and management of other timber stands while emphasizing field conversion, reclamation, and stocking control. The tour will end alongside a beautiful spring fed pond where we will have lunch. The Linn County Small Woodlands group and the Weld family welcome all interested individuals, OSWA members or not, for the tour and lunch. Date:  Saturday, Sep 22 Time:  10:00 am tour, 12 noon lunch. April 2018: Thompson Timber Co. Tree Farm Tour

Thompson Timber Co. Tree Farm Tour This tour will feature a 165 year old stand established following the 1850 Yaquina Burn. Steve Kadas (Thompson Timber Forester) will discuss local history, forest succession and characteristics, and salvage logging practices. Date : Saturday, April 21 Time : 8:30 to noon, Optional byo (bring your own) picnic to follow, weather permitting. Basic Woodland Management OSU Extension Forestry and Natural Resources is offering the ever-popular Basic Woodland Management Shortcourse this April in two locations, Tangent and Dallas. Ideal for anyone who is just starting out taking care of a woodland property, providing a broad introduction to woodland ownership. It is offered in four evening sessions with a Saturday fieldtrip. This year’s class is offered in conjunction with the Polk SWCD. Oregon Season Tracker (OST) is a citizen science program that gathers information about local weather and seasonal changes. Oregon Season Tracker Trainings Oregon Season Tracker is a citizen science project to collect and report rainfall and seasonal events. Participants take an on-line training at home and then attend a local in-person session for volunteer skills building and Q&A. OST Online Training : opens September xx (work on your own schedule). OST skills building sessions  ( attend one of three , tentatively scheduled for): Tuesday October 3, Thursday October 5, Tuesday October 17, Thursday October 19, Wednesday November 15 Time : 6:00 - 8:00 pm Cost:  $40 per individual or family sharing materials. Annual Picnic of the Linn Chapter of OSWA The Linn Chapter of the Oregon Small Woodlands Association invites you (OSWA member and public alike) to join them for their annual picnic. Activities for all ages will begin at 9:00 and include a tour of the property, educational displays and plant identification. It is a great chance to see a well-managed woodland property and visit with friends. The Sallee and Tye family will grill burgers, so please bring a potluck item to share. We will join Professor Mike Newton for a visit to a variable density research site (a Nelder plot) to hear some of what he learned there, and in other density-related work while at OSU.
